A free family tree maker that works in your browser

Create Your Family Tree draws a classic, printable family tree chart as you add people. There is no account to create and nothing to install — and because your tree is stored only in your own browser, your family's names and dates never leave your device.

Build in any direction

Start with yourself or a great-grandparent, then add parents, spouses, children and siblings. Aunts, uncles and cousins fall into place automatically, one generation per row.

Print a keepsake chart

Print on a landscape page or save as a PDF, with a family title such as “The Bennett Family”. Download a PNG image to share in messages.

Photos, dates and notes

Add a photo, birth and death years, birthplaces, occupations and stories to each person. Photos are shrunk and kept locally.

GEDCOM in and out

Open a .ged file exported from another genealogy program, or export your tree as GEDCOM 5.5.1. What is GEDCOM?

Private by design

No sign-up, no upload, no tracking of your tree. Save a backup file whenever you like and re-open it on any device. Privacy

Undo anything

Removed the wrong person? Press Undo (Ctrl+Z or ⌘Z). Every change can be undone and redone.

How to make your family tree

  1. Add the first person. Usually yourself — but any relative works.
  2. Click a person to open their details, then use Parent, Spouse, Child or Sibling to add relatives.
  3. Fill in names and years. Write “c. 1930” when you are unsure of a date.
  4. Print or export. Use Print & export for a PDF, PNG or GEDCOM file, and Save file for a backup.

Frequently asked questions

Is this family tree maker really free?

Yes. Every feature is free, with no account, no trial and no limit on the number of people.

Where is my family tree stored?

In your own browser's local storage on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server. Clearing your browser data erases it, so use Save file to keep a backup you can re-open on any device.

Can I print my family tree?

Yes. Print & export → Print lays the chart out on a landscape page with a family title. Choose “Save as PDF” in the print dialog to get a PDF, or download a PNG image instead.

Can I import a GEDCOM file from another genealogy program?

Yes. Open accepts .ged GEDCOM files as well as this site's own .json files. Names, sex, birth and death dates, places, notes and family links are imported; photos and source citations are not.

How do I show a second marriage or half-siblings?

Add each partner with Spouse. When you add a child to someone with more than one partner, choose the other parent from the list — half-siblings then appear under their own parents.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Drag with one finger to move around the chart and pinch to zoom; tap a person to edit them.
